Our History

The Little Green Church of Martindale  traces its roots way back to 1871  when the Methodist-Episcopal Church at Pleasant Ridge was formed. A school was also built on the property that was located on the east side of the present day FM 1979, approximately one mile south of the San Marcos River.
The first Pastor was J.W Vest and some of the first church members included families with  familiar last names like Holmes, Williams, Williamson, Cliett, Garrison, Lowman, McGehee, Spruill, and Reese.
During the time between 1901 and 1903 members of the Church at Pleasant Ridge split between two new churches with 20 Pleasant Ridge members transferring to Staples and 31 members transferring to Martindale.
The present day church building in Martindale was built in 1903 for a sum of $1600 with $800 of it coming from Mrs. Z.T. Cliett and the remaining $800 donated by 88 different individuals and businesses from all over the area.  The Reverend J.J. Shaw was the first pastor when the church was organized as the Martindale Methodist Episcopal Church-South on November 8, 1903.
Construction on the church parsonage (our present day fellowship building) began in 1907 and was completed in 1911.
The Church eventually came under the umbrella of the United Methodist Church.
In the early 2000’s the Methodist Church bishop sent retired Methodist minister Don Duvall to close down the church which had dwindled down to just 5 members.
When the small congregation was informed by Rev. Duvall of his “mission” they pleaded with him not to close it. His heart hurt for their dilemma and was convinced to help them “resurrect” their church. The church started to grow and within a few short years had over a 100 members. Rev. Duvall created the message of “We believe Resurrection is better than burial”. The church has remained solid in its faith of Christ ever since. The Holy Spirit remains in the Little Green Church directing the congregation with the charge of the “Great Commission”
On May 8, 2023, our church disaffiliated from the United Methodist church to become an independent Christian church and became The Little Green Church of Martindale, Inc. and is now a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation.
